Scrap metal recycling has many benefits, both for the environment and for your wallet. Certain types of scrap metals sell for more than others, so it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the different prices that different metals sell for before you begin to bring your scrap to a metal recycling facility. As a general rule of thumb, non-ferrous metals (metals that do not contain iron) like copper and brass typically hold more scrap value than ferrous metals (metals made primarily of iron) like steel and cast iron. In this article, we’ll dive deeper into some of the types of metal that are commonly sold for scrap!
Copper
Copper is widely considered to be one of the most valuable types of metal that is often sold for its scrap value (other than precious metals like gold & silver). Copper, while valuable, is typically not too hard to find. It can be found in old electrical appliances and throughout homes in places like the kitchen and bathroom. Copper wire and pipes hold a high scrap value that can earn you a pretty penny when you bring them to a scrap metal recycling center!
Brass
Another metal that is commonly sold for its scrap value is brass. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that is often used for its decorative appearance, as it has a bright, gold-like appearance. Brass can be found in doorknobs, door handles, fixtures, and in many other places in the kitchen and bathrooms of a home. Additionally, some types of pipes are made of brass. While brass is not usually worth quite as much as copper, it will still earn you a good amount of money per pound.
Aluminum
While aluminum is not worth as much as copper or brass on a per pound basis, it’s much more abundant and easier to find. Along with soda & beer cans, aluminum can also be found in old bicycles, game consoles, car parts, window frames, gutters, doors, lightning rods, pots, pans, and more. Because aluminum is so easy to find, you can earn lots of cash by bringing a large amount of it to your scrap metal recycling facility!
Along with copper, brass, and aluminum, many other metals, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, wrought iron, lead, iron, appliances, equipment, and much more, can be sold for scrap at a metal recycling facility!
